Appreciate a Dragon Day: Literary Dragons and Naming Your Pets After Them

WHOA. Did you guys know this was a day?? I didn’t know this was a day. Not until I got on Twitter and wondered (marveled!) at the number of dragon hashtags populating my feed. Appreciate a Dragon Day! What an excellent idea.

I felt like I should write something to commemorate this day, and decided to do so by tackling a common problem: picking a dragon to name your pet after.

It doesn’t seem like a difficult task, until you try to do it. Right now, name five dragons without asking Jeeves or Google or the search engine of your choice.

I’m sure some of you can, but for those of you who recently made a trip to an animal shelter or whose dog recently had puppies, here are some famous (mostly literary) dragons to consider*:

Kazul from The Enchanted Forest Chronicles
Roxim (Enchanted Forest)
Marchak (Enchanted Forest)
Smaug from The Hobbit
Ancalagon the Black (Middle-earth)
Gadzooks fromThe Last Dragon Chronicles
Gawain (Last Dragon Chronicles)
Gretel (Last Dragon Chronicles)
Saphira from Eragon
Lenora (Eragon world)
Valdr (Eragon world)
Falkor from The Neverending Story
Darlantan from The Dragonlance Chronicles
Spyro from Skylanders (*giggle* had to sneak this one in)
Ember from Talon
Vesta from Slayers
Khan (Slayers)
Minerva (Slayers)
Jupiter (Slayers)
Kihawahine, Kiha for short (Slayers)
Drogon from Game of Thrones
Viserion (Game of Thrones)
Rhaegal (Game of Thrones)
Sunfyre (Game of Thrones)
Caraxes (Game of Thrones)
Dreamfyre (Game of Thrones)
Valyron (Game of Thrones)
Yevaud from A Wizard of Earthsea
Faranth from Dragonriders of Pern
Tabitha from The Talking Parcel
Norbert fromHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Scarlet from The Sword of Truth series
Firedrake from Dragon Rider
Maia (Dragon Rider)
Valdearg from the Merlin Saga
Gwynnia (Merlin)

There you have it, crew, some excellent dragons to name your pets after. Or, if the dragon itself isn’t excellent, at least the name is!

Now go appreciate the dragons in your life!

P.S. the picture for this blog post is of my office dragon, Apollo. Dom drew him on the chalkboard side of my shelf so that I can hang out with him every day.

*Disclaimer: this list is not comprehensive. I did not name every dragon for each book/series included. In cases of stories with multiple dragons, I tried to pick my favorites (which didn’t always work; lookin’ at you, Slayers).
